The Sustainable Sports Program (SSP) is proudly supported by the Northern Suburbs Football Association (NSFA) in partnership with the local community sports clubs.
The SSP provides a framework and resources for community sports clubs to implement sustainable practices and initiatives.
It aims to engage youth and their families in driving grassroots sustainability initiatives and creating positive change in their communities.
The program includes five key modules:
- Sustainable Canteen Audit: A web-based app to promote green sports canteens, encouraging the use of reusable cups and water bottles, and installing water refill stations.
- 3-Tier Waste Management Recycling Bins: Introduction of recycling bins for plastics, glass, and food waste, promoting proper waste management and recycling practices.
- Recycle and Replant for Goodness Weekend: A community event where sports clothes and football boots are donated for recycling, benefiting rural towns affected by disasters and supporting indigenous youth sports programs.
- Bush and/or Beach Environmental Clean-ups: Engaging youth in activities to clean up littered plastics in natural environments, raising awareness about the impact of pollution.
- Youth Ambassador Representatives: Local club youth ambassadors lead and drive community initiatives, fostering leadership and engagement among young athletes.
The program is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on areas such as responsible consumption, climate action, and environmental conservation.
It provides measurable goals, including:
- the annual tonnage of clothes recycled,
- the number of trees planted,
- the reduction of plastic waste in canteens.
The partnership between NSFA and the SSP, originally founded by Liz Courtney and Linda Curtis from Northbridge FC, highlights the commitment of the football community to environmental stewardship and fostering a sustainable future.
