The NSFA Women’s Select secured the association’s first victory over the MWFA Select, picking up a 1-0 win last night at Cromer Park.
In perfect weather conditions on the Northern Beaches both teams started with purpose, the home side looking to exploit their speed out wide by long cross-field passes to wingers Nina Hall and Sarah D’Urso.
However the NSFA defence held firm, with central defensive pairing Marta Kielich and Holly Burgmann showing the strength of their partnership at club level with Northbridge.
NSFA midfielder Xanthe Muston (Northbridge) created a pair of chances from corner kicks, forcing a save from Jerri Gerich before hitting the side netting from the ensuing set-piece delivery.
MWFA enjoyed their best chance in the middle stages of the second half, with a succession of passes moving the ball upfield before a pinpoint cross found Kiah Kennedy on the penalty spot. However, her well-struck volley was gathered by NSFA goalkeeper Jacinta Martin (Turramurra United).
Ella Boudakin was a persistent threat on the left flank, creating havoc with her direct running into the heart of the MWFA defence. The Northbridge striker would open the scoring in the closing stages of the first half, turning her marker inside the box and unleashing a shot that ended up in the back of the net despite a hand from the goalkeeper.
Boudakin continued to cause problems for the MWFA defence in the second half, combining well with Muston, Linda Carroll (Northbridge) and Lorin Lambert (West Pymble). A quick counter attack saw Boudakin find the back of the net, only to have the play called back for offside.
The home side were determined to level the scores, earning a multitude of corners but the NSFA defence and substitute goalkeeper Holly Walker (North Sydney) held strong against the aerial threat.
The NSFA Select had their chances to finish off the game in the final minutes, following two strong runs from Boudakin down the left side. However, despite the lack of a second goal the NSFA side would hold on for the win.
