Women’s Premier League Weekly Review – Round 8

Round 8 of the NSFA and NWSF Women’s Premier League saw a reduced schedule with several teams playing in the state cup over the weekend, meaning we had fewer games than usual. North Sydney United, Northbridge, UTS and Lindfield saw their games rescheduled, with Lindfield FC playing their Round 8 fixture on Friday night this week. Back to Berowra day took centre stage on Sunday afternoon, with Northern Galaxy hosting Hornsby Heights in a blockbuster local derby.

Northern Galaxy 0 – 5 Hornsby Heights FC

Northern Galaxy entered Sunday’s clash full of confidence after securing their second win of the season, aiming to build momentum with another three points. Hornsby Heights, meanwhile, came into the match unbeaten in their previous four fixtures either side of a bye, looking to continue their rise up the ladder.

The contest began evenly, with both sides creating chances in search of the opener. It was Hornsby Heights who struck first through Mia Hing, who continued her strong season with a goal in the 15th minute to give the visitors the lead. Hing doubled the advantage just before halftime, sending Heights into the break in control at 2-0.

Galaxy searched for a response in the second half, but Hornsby Heights continued their impressive recent form with a disciplined defensive display. Further goals from Simona Vitale, Cheyenne Dearie and Kiara Catherine Grandinetti sealed a dominant 5-0 victory for the visitors.

Congratulations to Mia Hing, whose electric two-goal performance earns her Player of the Round.

Rest of the Round

Epping FC returned to winning ways this weekend with an important victory over Putney Rangers, while the Macquarie Dragons secured a crucial 3-1 win against Normanhurst Eagles in a key clash near the bottom of the ladder. The Flying Bats also continued their strong run of form, claiming their second consecutive victory with a convincing 3-0 result over Beecroft FC.

Several sides were in State Cup action over the weekend, with North Sydney United, UTS FC, Northbridge FC and Lindfield FC all playing in the knockout competition. North Sydney United, UTS and Lindfield progressed through to the next round, while Northbridge narrowly missed out following a tight defeat to Oatley FC.

Lindfield FC will now turn their attention back to league action when they face WPHC FC in their rescheduled Round 8 fixture on Friday night.
