After two years of cancellations, the NSFA Cups and Shields Finals returned to the competitions calendar, with six different NSFA clubs winning trophies across the weekend at North Turramurra Recreation Area and Charles Bean Oval.
All matches were played with fantastic energy despite the wet weather, with plenty of spectators from all clubs coming out to support their teams.
Berowra kicked off the weekend by winning the Treasurer’s Shield in a closely contested match against St Ives FC, before North Sydney United secured their fifth consecutive Rick Close Cup with a strong win against West Pymble, who battled hard after a golden goal semi-final during the week.
Willoughby Dalleys FC won their first NSFA Men’s Cup since 1997 with a 3-2 win over Lindfield FC in the final fixture on Saturday afternoon. They were pushed all the way by the runners-up, who equalised twice during the match but couldn’t find another goal when required to chalk off Ed Scougall’s winning header.
It was an all-Lindfield FC affair in the Vice-President’s Shield to start off Sunday’s action, with the 16A’s seeing off an early challenge from the 15A’s before powering home to win the trophy.
Hornsby Heights FC and West Pymble FC contested a thrilling President’s Shield final, with both sides scoring late goals to send the match into golden-goal extra time before West Pymble FC scored the decisive goal in the second half of extra time with penalties looming.
The inaugural NSFA Women’s Cup final saw Premier League winners Turramurra United complete the double in a 1-0 win over UTS White. The Division 2 champions provided a taste of what is to come from them in next year’s Premier League, pushing their opposition all the way and enjoying a number of chances. Turramurra took the lead later in the first half after Uma van Egmond-Jones finished a cross from Rosie Andrew, turning in a composed defensive effort in the second half to secure the victory.
NSFA would like to congratulate all teams and match officials in creating a memorable weekend of high-quality matches to conclude the 2022 winter season.
Special thanks to NSFA Life Members Marcia Allman, Dave Watson and Chris Rayner for their attendance and support across the weekend, as well as local dignitaries Jeff Pettett (Mayor of Ku-ring-gai), Alister Henskens (State Member for Ku-ring-gai), Tanya Taylor (Mayor of Willoughby), Kim Wheatley (Ku-ring-gai Councillor), Martin Smith (Ku-ring-gai Councillor), Barbara Ward (Ku-ring-gai Councillor) and Alec Taylor (Ku-ring-gai Councillor) and NSFA Board Members Dr Ian Plant, Lee Sullivan, Jacinta Martin, Simon Cox and Dimitrios Gongolidis.
