Become A Referee

Become A Referee

Each year the Northern Suburbs Football Referees Association (NSFRA) trains around 100+ new referees, both senior and junior. Our Accredited coaches run numerous FFA Level 4 Referee Courses both in pre-season and during the season itself. The NSFRA provides match officials for all NSFA Summer and Winter competitions, as well as selected NPL Fixtures.

Registration for a Referee joining the NSFRA, whether qualified or not, is $120. NSFRA Referees registering with the NSFRA for the 2025 season must pay the $100 registration fee.

If you have any questions about becoming a referee or the registration process, please contact the NSFRA Referees Manager, Peter Plant, by emailing referees@nsfra.com.au.

Why should I referee?

There are so many different reasons to become a referee. It’s a great way to:
1. Earn some extra money
2. Give back to the game you love
3. Stay fit and active
4. Build leadership skills like effective communication and decision-making.

What is the minimum age to begin?

To become a referee, you must be 13 years of age or over and you will need to complete the Football Australia Online Laws of the Game Course as well as completing a Level 4 Referee Course.

To become a Qualified Referee (complete in order listed):

1. Complete the Football Australia Online Laws of the Game – this is a free online course that provides an introduction to the Laws of the Game to help you on your journey to become a referee – see FNSW guide HERE
2. Complete a Level 4 Referee Course with the NSFRA. This involves online theory modules as well as an in-person practical course – course dates can be found below.
3. Register with the NSFRA through the PlayFootball link above and pay the $120 registration cost (not including the $30 payment to Football Australia to do the course)
4. Collect your uniform (3x shirts, shorts, socks, whistle, linesman flags, cards and notebooks) from the NSFA office in Pymble on Friday afternoons between 3-5pm.

Detailed information and how to complete all of the above steps will be provided once courses for 2025 have been finalised. We do not recommend prospective referees completing the online components until just prior to their theory and practical training sessions.

NSFRA Referees are paid according to the FootballNSW Community Football Match Payments.
