Women’s Premier League Weekly Review – Round 9

Women’s Premier League Weekly Review – Round 9

The rain had cleared by Sunday, and the Women’s Premier League returned in full swing. With all teams back in action after last weekend’s State Cup, the race near the top of the table continued to tighten.

Lindfield responded strongly after their Friday night loss with an important win, while Northbridge knocked off the in-form Hornsby Heights. UTS and the Flying Bats both produced dominant performances, while Epping FC and Beecroft FC picked up valuable wins against sides around them on the ladder. There are now just 3 points separating 1st and 5th, with the league proving to be closer than ever before.

Beecroft FC 4 – 2 Northern Galaxy

Going into this clash, the two sides were separated by just three points, with Northern Galaxy looking to draw level with Beecroft on the ladder. For Beecroft, a win was crucial as they aimed to close the gap on the tightly contested top six.

Beecroft made the perfect start at Meadowbank Park, striking twice early through Karla Hansen and Shelby Vala in the 7th and 11th minutes. They remained organised defensively throughout the match as Northern Galaxy searched for a way back, before Audrey Fallone extended the lead in the 67th minute.

Galaxy responded through Scarlett O’Leary to make it 3-1 and spark hopes of a comeback, but Beecroft answered immediately as Fallone grabbed her second of the afternoon. A late Galaxy goal set up a tense finish, though Beecroft held firm to secure a valuable three points.

The win lifts Beecroft one point clear of Hornsby Heights as they continue to chase down the top half of the league table.

Putney Rangers 0 – 10 UTS FC

Every three points is crucial in the race at the top of the table, and UTS FC knew a win here was vital to maintaining their position at the summit.

UTS once again showed why they are the benchmark of the competition, producing a dominant attacking display to score 5 first-half goals and a further 5 in the second-half.

The victory keeps UTS FC two points clear of both Northbridge and WPHC at the top of the league. They have now won seven of their eight matches this season, suffering just one defeat, and continue to set the pace for the rest of the competition.

North Sydney United 1 – 3 Lindfield FC

This was a clash as big as they come, with three crucial points on the line for two sides pushing towards the top of an incredibly tight competition. Lindfield were searching for a response after their defeat to WPHC FC just two nights earlier, while North Sydney United entered the match looking to make it four straight wins. The contest certainly lived up to its Match of the Round billing.

Lindfield struck first at Cammeray Oval through Emily Wood in the 20th minute, before Emily Edwards responded for the home side to level the scores. Locked at 1-1 heading into halftime, the game remained finely poised as both teams searched for the go-ahead goal in the second half.

With the pressure building and the importance of the result growing, it was Lindfield who found the breakthrough. Emma Watkins restored the visitors’ lead in the 67th minute, giving them the edge in a fiercely contested encounter. North Sydney United pushed hard for an equaliser late on, but Emma Hochart dramatically sealed the result with an 89th-minute goal to secure a vital 3-1 victory.

The win leaves Lindfield sitting three points off the top of the table, although they have played one more game than the sides around them. North Sydney United sit just two points behind them in the standings.

Northbridge FC 2 – 0 Hornsby Heights FC

This was another crucial match in this Round of Premier League action, with Northbridge looking to extend their winning streak while Hornsby Heights came in full of confidence after a convincing victory over their rivals last week.

The action came early in this one, as Hannah Johns struck twice inside the opening 16 minutes to give Northbridge a commanding 2-0 lead. From there, the home side defended strongly, holding firm for the remainder of the contest to secure an impressive clean-sheet victory. The result keeps Northbridge within touching distance of top spot on the ladder, continuing their strong run of form.

Congratulations to Hannah Johns, whose brilliant brace in a standout team performance earns her Player of the Round honours.

Rest of the Round

The Flying Bats secured a strong victory over Macquarie Dragons to remain inside the league’s top five, while Epping FC made it back-to-back wins with an emphatic 5-0 result against Normanhurst Eagles.

The results from this round have kept the competition close at both ends of the table as the league heads into Round 10 next week.
