Skellern Cup returns for 2022

Skellern Cup returns for 2022

With one eye on next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, NSFA is excited to be celebrating the return of the NSFA Skellern Cup next week at North Turramurra Recreation Area.

Over 450 players from 13 primary schools across the NSFA region will be participating in this year’s Skellern Cup, a tournament designed for females in Years 3 to 6.

The free tournament aims to provide both new and experienced players with a positive playing experience to attract and retain players for the NSFA’s winter football competitions, which commence on the first weekend of April.

“With the World Cup coming next year interest in football is on the rise, in particular for females,” explains Eilidh Mackay, NSFA Head of Female Football.

“The Skellern Cup aims to provide our participants with life-long memories within a football environment, not just from playing but the experience of participating in an event like this with their friends from school and feeling part of the wider football community within NSFA.”

“We hope this then provides an incentive for players who aren’t involved with a local club to register for the upcoming season, or for existing players who may have left to try another sport to continuing playing.”

The Junior Skellern Cup (Years 3 and 4) will be played on Wednesday 23rd March, with the Senior Skellern Cup (Years 5 and 6) taking place on Thursday 24th March.

The NSFA Skellern Cup first began in 2017 and forms part of the association’s What’s Best For Her strategy, which aims to grow female football within the region.

Since first releasing the What’s Best For Her strategy in 2020, NSFA has increased both female player (21% to 26%) and coach (7% to 14%) representation on the way to its goals of 32% and 25% respectively by 2024.
