Sustainable Sports Program Launched

Sustainable Sports Program Launched

Northern Suburbs Football Association kicked off the Sustainable Sports Program (SSP) with its 30 member clubs, local dignitaries, and representatives from Football NSW at an official launch at North Turramurra Recreation Area.

The brainchild of local football mums Linda Curtis and Liz Courtney, the SSP was piloted last year with NSFA club Northbridge FC with the assistance of a Federal Government grant.

The program is aimed at creating sustainable canteens, recycling within our Clubs and developing good practices in our participants for the future.

Within NSFA the initiative will be supported by over 40 youth ambassadors, who will take on leadership roles and participate in workshops and activities throughout the season.

Currently the ambassador program has representatives from Turramurra United, Hornsby Heights, Northbridge, St Ives, West Pymble, Kissing Point and Lane Cove.

North Sydney MP Trent Zimmerman and Ku-ring-gai Councillor Donna Greenfield with players from St Ives FC.

“It’s fantastic to see the next generation of our football community getting involved in the program,” commented NSFA CEO Ed Ferguson.

“By supporting our NSFA clubs in the SSP we hope to drive long-term change within the community about our approach to recycling and care for our facilities.”

Following the implementation of the SSP within the NSFA region, the next step is to map out a state-wide rollout, with Football NSW CEO Stuart Hodge and Board Director Stephanie Brantz attending the launch.

North Sydney MP Trent Zimmerman and Ku-ring-gai Councillor Donna Greenfield were present at the event, with Zimmerman continuing his support from the Northbridge pilot. NSFA CEO Edward Ferguson, Board President Dr Ian Plant and Vice President Hilary Bingham were also in attendance.

Those wishing to find out more about the SSP in NSFA can contact Hilary Bingham by emailing bingham.hilary@gmail.com.

If other NSFA players wish to register as a Youth Ambassador, please complete the registration details through this online form.

The next Youth Ambassador meeting  (via Zoom) is Thursday 6 May. At this meeting we are looking to discuss with the Youth Ambassadors how they can get involved in organising:

  • Recycling and Replanting for Goodness Weekend for their club
  • Bush and/or Beach Clean ups in their local areas
  • Access to the Sustainable Sports Program Charter and display in their club areas
