NSFA Men’s Select Defeated In Penalty Shootout Loss To MWFA Select

MWFA MEN’S SELECT 3 – 3 NSFA MEN’S SELECT (MWFA MEN’S SELECT WIN 4-3 ON PENALTIES)

The Men’s Select team has been narrowly defeated on penalties after an enthralling 3-3 draw. The Select team came into the headline fixture with plenty of promise after strong performances against Northbridge FC & Northern Tigers U20’s led by Head Coach Rick Woodward (Northbridge FC) and Assistant Coaches Jay Wynter and Sam Ford (both Northbridge FC).

The game started off with a high tempo; both teams creating plenty of early chances in and around the oppositions penalty areas. Manly Warringah FA opened the scoring after fifteen minutes with a cool finish into the bottom right corner of the goal narrowly beating the NSFA goalkeeper.

The MWFA lead didn’t last for very long, with Northbridge FC forward Zach Forsyth finishing off a great move after some tidy combination play down the left side.

MWFA took the lead soon after Forsyth’s goal, with a shot from outside the penalty area rocketing off the underside of the crossbar to send the Manly crowd into raptures. This gave MWFA Select a 2-1 lead heading into the half-time break.

NSFA Select came out firing in the second half and dominated the play. However, ten minutes after the resumption of play, MWFA fired another shot from outside the penalty area, deceiving the NSFA Select goalkeeper and firing them into a 3-1 lead with 30 minutes to play.

Five minutes later, NSFA Select were awarded a penalty. Shane Murray (Northbridge FC forward) stepped up to the spot and slotted home the rebound after the keeper saved the initial attempt.

With fifteen minutes to play, a lofted pass was delicately played over the defensive line, leaving Michael Cole (Northbridge FC) with a composed finish under pressure to level the scores

The sides were unable to be separated when the referee blew the whistle for the end of the 90 minutes and penalties were required to decide the winner. MWFA were victorious in the penalty shoot-out, winning 4-3, keeping the Men’s trophy down at Cromer Park for another year.

NSFA wish to congratulate all playing and coaching members of the NSFA Men’s Select team for their efforts shown through the fixture and in their preparations. The NSFA is excited for a competitive Premier League season to come in 2023.
