Local junior in line for Matildas debut

16-year-old Amy Sayer could make her debut for the Matildas in the coming days after being selected in the Tournament of Nations squad by coach Alen Stajic.

The Northbridge junior has been making waves in the Young Matildas, playing a starring role in their second-place finish at the recent AFF Women’s Championship in Indonesia. Sayer received her senior call-up during the tournament.

“I got the news from my mum, we had been chatting through text messages and she suddenly sent me a message that said ‘OMG you’re in the Matildas!’,” Sayer told The Women’s Game.

“I checked my email and there was a message from the FFA telling me I had been selected to join the Matildas squad for the Tournament of Nations.

“I was in in shock and just kept re-reading the email over and over until it sunk in that it was true!”

It’s been an incredible twelve months for Sayer, who made her W-League debut last season for Canberra United after linking up with her former coach at Sydney University, Heather Garriock.

The midfielder made ten appearances in the 2017-18 W-League season, scoring her maiden goal in Round 3 against Perth Glory.

Sayer could become the second NSFA junior to make her debut for the national team this year, after West Pymble FC junior Rachel Lowe came off the bench against China in the Algarve Cup in March.

The Matildas kick off their Tournament of Nations campaign on Friday morning against Brazil as they look to defend their 2017 title.
